I was OUT at work yesterday... by OUT i mean i wasn't in office almost the whole day... in the morning went to some review meeting and came back with a list of changes.... afternoon went to deliver my client's PC and collect a hard disk... you must be thinking why is it that as a Software Engineer I have to do such things... well someone ask me this question too... my answer? cos the intern CMI...
yesterday while out delivering the PC i start to think why does compaq have to make their PC so bloody heavy.. its one of the heaviest mini-tower pc i have carried... even heavier than my own tower pc...
than when i finish my job and start walking to the taxi stand, i start to think why do i have to do all these things... i don't use to have to do them.. in the past i just pass down instructions to my intern and they will follow and do the things for me... of course sometimes they fumble but in the end they will still get the job done...
i use to have this intern who is a blur sotong... we call her A-Ca (as in calamari)... she is more blur than Miss Sotong lor... but when i give her instructions she will ask all the questions she need and than go out to fulfill her job... of course sometimes she dunno what to do than she will call back... but after like 2 times she will be able to resolve most of the matters on her own.. i just need to tell her go down fix that thing i don't even have to repeat the procedures she have to take again...
nowadays my interns i dunno wat to say... literally have to spoonfeed them to the mouth.. have to give them precise instructions... there can't be any ambiguity... else they won't know wat to do and will call you up... sometimes i really think is it a problem with my communication skills or wat... and they only know how to do things within what they are taught in school which is programming...
i mean true enough as a programmer you should noe how to do programming.. but you are on an internship.. you should take this chance to learn watever things that is not taught in school and raise your assets... so when i teach thou some hardware things please at least try to learn it up lah.. and not ask me the same question everytime... it reflects badly on thou and thy company lor.... as an IT personnel, how can you restrict yourself to knowing just programming? sometimes you have to learn the hardware things also...
when i graduated from Poly i noe nuts about PC hardware.. cos that is not taught in school.. we are only trained to be programmers.. not system engineers.. so i pay the money to go learn the skills as i don't want to be an IT personnel that doesn't know what goes on beyond my programs... now thou have a free chance to learn but choose to take it as a chore... what is the world becoming too?
am i getting old or there is something seriously wrong with the younger generation???
