Saw the Asian Beat poster while walking to my office a few days back.. and was thinking whether to go or not... and coincidentally, HE told me he might have a job on Saturday and HE is still considering whether to take it... my first tot was it might be Asian Beat... but I din't say anything and he was tired after the doing the feature film for the week... and later in the day HE called me again.. say the job will be at Orchard.. and as I have guessed it was Asian Beat... I told him he could take the job if he is not tired.. as I wanted to go down and watch it too.. Actually my aim is to watch the Drum Clinic.. but the sad thing is they din't annouce what time is it... *#$%#$%*
Poor HIM fell sick on Saturday... but he still continue on with his work... i met him to see him eat dinner and went off to meet my sis who is alone this weekend as my BIL is on shift... we had dinner and later she wants to get black heels so we went round shopping for it.. and finally got a nice pair at URS... afterwhich we move on to Civic Plaza to watch the Asian Beat contest... (yupz the drum clinic was at 2pm... *#%$#$%*)
The thing started and my sis and I also start yaking away.. She asked a lot of funny questions about US and we talk alot... which was good... she left soon as she wants to go buy the Green Shoes which we saw at C&K... and i stayed on to watch the contest...
Generally speaking i find the contestants were a bit gimmicky... a few bands left some impression on me... actually i find the Thai performance quite good especially when they started off with a slow jazz on a sax... and move on to be more rock... but i din't quite like it when they start doing a stormz performance and thai dancing.... maybe I'm a bit too traditional.. but it just make the thing so un-rock... but well actually defination of rock is up to individual....
As for the HK band... theirs was a bit on the heavy side... and the guitarist wasn't that bad looking.. (hahaha) but its a pity that their performance was so-so... and the thing i don't like about it is that its a bit too gimmicky and lack the high-ness of rock... they had co-oridinated head-nodding moves which makes it all look so fake... and the vocals of the lead sing was really not that powerful enough to do a rock scream...
Than the TW band... which was the winner of the night... actually i'm quite impress by them... in that when the stage was pass to them the drummer instrument was still being adjusted... so the lead sing on seeing it, starts to explain their band name Rolling Dice in his broken Enlish... and later after explanation the drum is still not up yet.. he actually apologise and ask the audience to give them sometime for it... this is pro... not like some band which just let the audience standing / sitting there waiting for things to happen.... BUT the downside about the group is that i find the song they sang a bit too commercialize.. its a pop-rock song which is a bit....
And the Indonesia band i tot was good too... the did a really rock piece.. but there was also too much gimmicky stunts like placing the bass on the floor to play, etc... and the co-ordinated dance move by the lead sing was a bit commercialize also... but they belongs to the 視覺係 which is an arena i'm not so familar with... so maybe that is common in them.. i'm not sure...
And the guest performance by the jap band was entertaining too... you see the fusion of traditional Jap instruments and music with western rock culture... and the lead sing try to get everybody up and moving and replying to his songs.. much like 軋車... but as usual Singaporeans just can't be bothered.... well i'm guilty of that too cos i was standing quite far and the pple beside me were like quite dead.. and i was alone... so i can't really join in the fun... which is sianz...
After the contest, there was a guest performance by a local band... and they sang for a good half-hour.. how i wish the band performing up there was Mayday... i miss their live performance... hahahaa..... but of course i'm dreaming....
And like i mention the contest was won by the Taiwanese band... and a thing to mention is the best drummer went to the only lady drummer in the competition... woooohoooooo.....
As the show draws to an end I start sitting down waiting for HIM to finish his work.... and it so happen that an Ang Moh who claims that he is a French came to ask if I'm interested to have a drink... his opening line is so lame.... hahaha...
and now my whole leg is still aching from the standing on Saturday.... how i wish i can have a nice foot bath now....
